This blue cheese dressing is super easy to make and it is light, creamy and really delicious and it rivals any restaurant blue cheese dressing out there.

It can be really tempting to buy a bottle of salad dressing at the grocery store, but honestly once you get in the habit of making dressings at home, the convenience of store-bought dressing loses its appeal. Homemade dressings are healthier (there’s no preservatives or artificial flavors, and they contain less salt and sugar), and they just taste far superior to the bottled stuff.

Blue Cheese Dressing Recipe Ingredients

  • Mayonnaise. Use a good real mayonnaise like Best Foods (Hellman’s).
  • Sour Cream.  We use full fat sour cream.
  • Buttermilk. This adds a richness to the flavor of the dressing.
  • Blue Cheese. Blend in the blue cheese so the dressing is smooth and creamy, or blend in half of the blue cheese and then stir in the rest if you want flecks of blue cheese in the dressing.
  • Seasoning. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

How To Make Blue Cheese Dressing

  1. Blender. Add the mayonnaise, buttermilk, sour cream, apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons blue cheese to a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Stir in the remaining 2 tablespoons blue cheese (add more if you like) and the salt and pepper.
  2. Whisk. You can also whisk the ingredients together in a bowl using a wire whisk, wooden spoon or a fork if you don’t want to use a blender.
  3. Refrigerate. Refrigerate up to 1 hour before serving so the dressing is nice and chilled and the flavors have a chance to blend together.
  4. Store Leftovers. Store the dressing in a mason jar or an airtight container in the refrigerator. If properly stored, it should last up to 5 days.

What Type Of Blue Cheese Should I Use?

These are a few of type of blue cheese you can use for this recipe. If you want a lighter tasting blue cheese (for people who don’t like the robust flavor of blue cheese), you could use a good Gorgonzola cheese but it won’t taste quite the same as a traditional blue cheese dressing.

  • Maytag – a dense and crumbly salty cheese with a tangy flavor.
  • Stilton – a soft and creamy with a more robust flavor.
  • Point Reyes – a semi-soft salty cheese with a buttery rich flavor.
