Small glass bowls filled with sour cream, Parmesan cheese, mayonnaise, vinegar and seasoning.

This homemade buttermilk salad dressing is one of my favorite creamy mayo-based salad dressing recipes to make. Not just because it tastes so good, but because my mom used to make it when I was a kid. It’s creamy good and the flavor is so addicting with the Parmesan cheese added to the mix. You will want to add more salads to your diet just to have an excuse to make this dressing!

Buttermilk Dressing Recipe Ingredients

  • Milk. We use milk and buttermilk for this recipe.
  • Mayonnaise. Use a good mayonnaise like Best Foods Real Mayonnaise (or Hellman’s).
  • Sour Cream. We use full fat sour cream for this recipe.
  • Vinegar. Just a splash of apple cider vinegar adds a little flavor and tang to the dressing. You could use lemon juice instead if you prefer.
  • Cheese. We add Parmesan cheese to the mix, which adds a great flavor to this dressing.
  • Seasoning. Just a pinch of garlic salt and white pepper is all we use to season this dressing with.

Variations

  • Add 1 clove minced garlic to the dressing instead of the garlic salt if you want a nice garlicky flavor. Some family members always prefer the addition of fresh garlic.
  • Use all buttermilk instead of 1/2 milk and 1/2 buttermilk.
  • Add a tablespoon or two more grated Parmesan cheese.
  • Add a splash or two of Worcestershire sauce.

How To Make Buttermilk Salad Dressing

  1. Blender. Add the mayonnaise, milk, buttermilk, sour cream, apple cider vinegar, Parmesan cheese, garlic salt and pepper to a blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
  2. Whisk. You can also whisk the ingredients together in a bowl using a wire whisk, wooden spoon or a fork if you don’t want to use a blender.
  3. Refrigerate. Refrigerate up to 1 hour before serving so the dressing is nice and chilled and the flavors have a chance to blend together.
  4. Store Leftovers. Store the dressing in a mason jar or an airtight container in the refrigerator. If properly stored, the dressing should last up to 5 days.

Why You’ll Love This Buttermilk Dressing

  • It’s Better Than Store-Bought.  Making any dressing at home from scratch is always a better idea than buying the bottled stuff from the store. When you make dressings at home, you can choose fresh ingredients and you can control the amount of salt and sugar. Some of the bottled stuff may contain preservatives and artificial flavors.
  • It’s Quick And Easy To Make. Making dressings from scratch literally takes just 5 minutes. Buy yourself some new mason jars so you can store your new favorite homemade dressings in them. Of course they’ll need to be stored in the refrigerator to stay fresh.
  • It Tastes Amazing. This buttermilk salad dressing has such an amazing flavor! I’ve taken it with salads to many potlucks over the years and it’s always popular!!
