Strawberry Salsa Recipe Ingredients

Clear glass bowls filled with chopped strawberries, onion, jalapeno, honey and lime juice for a strawberry salsa.

  • Strawberries. Use fresh, ripe and juicy strawberries.
  • Basil. We use fresh basil for this salsa.
  • Onion. Just a little red onion for flavor. Use green onion or sweet onion instead if you like.
  • Jalapeno. Adding jalapeno is optional. Many times we don’t add the jalapeno and this strawberry salsa is still so amazing without it!
  • Lime Juice AND Honey. We toss the salsa with the juice of 2 limes and a teaspoon (or two) of pure clover honey. It adds just the right amount of flavor to the mix.

Variations

  • Fruit. Toss is some fresh mango or avocado with the strawberries.
  • Herbs. Swap out the fresh basil and use cilantro or fresh mint instead.
  • Citrus.  Add a 1/2 a teaspoon of lime zest if you want to make the flavor really pop. You can also use a mixture of the juice of 1 orange and 1 lime for the drizzle instead of using 2 limes.

What To Serve With Strawberry Salsa

Should You Wash Strawberries Before Or After You Hull Them?

Rinse strawberries before hulling them so they won’t absorb water which can cause the berries to become soggy. Gently pat the strawberries dry with paper towels after rinsing them.

How To Hull Strawberries

Hold the strawberry with two fingers and thumb in one hand and hold a paring knife in the other hand. Insert the point of the knife into the leafy green top with the blade facing the center of the strawberry. Carefully turn the strawberry to slice out the leafy green top and hard white core just beneath the cap (called a calyx). Try to leave as much of the berry as possible. Another alternative is to simply cut along the very top of the strawberry removing the leafy green top.

How To Keep Strawberries Fresh Longer

Store strawberries in tightly sealed mason jars. Storing dry strawberries in sealed mason jars helps to slow down the ripening process and reduce the production of mold on them. Just be sure the strawberries are dry and that you discard moldy berries from the batch. If you choose to rinse the berries before placing them in the mason jars, then spread the rinsed berries out on paper towels and let them completely dry for an hour. Then gently add the berries to the mason jars, seal the lids tightly and refrigerate. If properly stored, the berries may last up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator.
