Boiled Potatoes Recipe Ingredients
- Baby Yukon Gold Potatoes. Use baby Yukon gold potatoes. The skins are thin so they don’t need to be peeled. Cut the larger potatoes in half so they are similar in size to the whole potatoes. We want all of the potatoes to be somewhat similar in size so they cook evenly.
- Fresh Garlic. We use fresh garlic so the potatoes taste good and garlicky.
- Butter. Butter adds a rich flavor to these potatoes.
- Fresh Parsley. We garnish these potatoes with fresh parsley.
- Seasoning. We season these butter potatoes with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

How To Make Boiled Potatoes
- Prep Potatoes. Cut the larger baby Yukon gold potatoes in half, so they are similar in size as the smaller whole potatoes so all of the potatoes are in somewhat the same size so they cook evenly.
- Boil Potatoes. Put the potatoes in a large pot and fill it with cold water to just barely cover the potatoes. Add 1 teaspoon salt to the water and bring the potatoes to a boil and partially cover with a lid. Cook the potatoes for 12-15 minutes or until the potatoes are fork tender. Remove from heat and drain the potatoes well. Return them to the pot or a colander and let them sit for 2-3 minutes to dry out any remaining water.
- Prepare Garlic Butter. While the potatoes are cooking, melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat, then add the minced garlic and swirl into the butter for about 1 minute. Immediately remove from heat and set aside.
- Drizzle Garlic Butter Over Potatoes. Transfer the potatoes to a bowl and drizzle the garlic butter over the potatoes and toss so they are all well coated. Toss in the chopped parsley and season with salt and pepper and gently toss the potatoes.
Tips For Making The Best Butter Potatoes
- Don’t overcrowd the pot with potatoes. You want them to all cook evenly.
- Don’t over cook the potatoes to the point they fall apart. We want them tender but they still hold their shape.
- Toss the potatoes while they’re still hot with the remaining melted garlic butter.
- Just before serving, toss the potatoes again so you can pull the garlic butter that has settled beneath the potatoes and toss to distribute it over the potatoes.
How Long To Boil Baby Potatoes?
If you add the baby potatoes to cold water, they take between 12 to 15 minutes to cook once the water comes to a boil. If you add the baby potatoes to already boiling water, then the baby potatoes will be done between 10-12 minutes. Stick a paring knife or dinner fork in one of the potatoes to check for doneness. If the knife or fork enter the potato easily and the potato stays intact without falling apart, the potatoes and done cooking. Remove them from the heat and drain them immediately, then set them back in the pot or a colander to dry out.
