  • Oregano.  Oregano adds a rich flavor.
  • Fennel Seeds. Fennel seeds add a great flavor to sauces. 
  • Red Pepper Flakes. Red pepper flakes also add flavor and a little spice. If you want a spicy sauce, then add even more.
  • Onion Powder.  Adding onion powder adds a rich flavor.
  • Turkish Bay Leaves. We like to add Turkish bay leaves to many of our sauces because it infuses a delicious rich flavor. Just remove them from the sauce before serving.

Variations

  • Swap out the Italian seasoning and use 1 teaspoon dried basil, 1/2 teaspoon dried, thyme, 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano and 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary.
  • Add 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder.
  • We add 2 teaspoons granulated sugar to our tomato based sauces. Sugar mellows the tartness of tomato. If you’re watching your sugar intake, then use only 1 teaspoon or omit the sugar altogether if you’re watching your sugar intake.

How To Use Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Seasoning

This homemade spaghetti sauce seasoning is great to use to make spaghetti, rigatoni and lasagna or use it to season chicken, fish and vegetables with. To make spaghetti sauce using our homemade spaghetti sauce seasoning, you’ll use the full amount of the seasoning provided in this recipe together with the following ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 pound ground turkey (or 1 pound Italian turkey (or chicken sausage), or 1/2 pound ground turkey and 1/2 pound Italian sausage. We like using 1/2 ground turkey and 1/2 Italian chicken sausage. The sausage adds a lot of flavor!
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  •  3-4 cloves garlic, finely minced

  •  1 15-ounce can tomato sauce
  •  1 6-ounce an tomato paste
  •  1 cup water
  •  2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • Spaghetti noodles for serving

To make the sauce, heat oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven. Add the ground turkey and sausage to the pan (be sure to remove the outer casing first) and break the links up into small pieces with a wooden spoon or spatula. Cook over medium-low heat for 7-10 minutes. Transfer the meat to a bowl and set aside. Add more oil to the skillet if needed, then stir in the onions to the same pot that you cooked the sausage in and sauté over low heat for about 5 minutes or until golden and turning soft. Add the garlic and sauté for another 2-3 minutes. Return the cooked meat back to the pot (juice and all) and stir. Stir in the seasoning. Add in the tomato sauce, tomato paste and water. Stir in the sugar.Simmer the sauce for about 20 minutes.
