Best Substitutes For Pumpkin Pie Spice

If you don’t have any pumpkin pie spice on hand, here are some of the best substitutes for pumpkin pie spice that you can use:

1. Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice

Pumpkin pie spice is a cozy spice blend made with ground cinnamon, ground ginger, ground nutmeg, ground cloves and allspice. The best substitute for pumpkin pie spice is a homemade version if you happen to have all of these spices on hand. To make homemade pumpkin pie spice just measure the ingredients into a small bowl or mason jar and stir with a fork or spoon. Use the same amount of homemade pumpkin pie spice as you would use for store-bought pumpkin pie spice. (1:1 ratio)

  • 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground allspice

For a 9″ pumpkin pie, you will likely need 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice. Here is a small batch recipe of pumpkin pie spice you can use:

  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

2. Apple Pie Spice

Apple pie spice has many of the same ingredients as pumpkin pie spice with cinnamon being the base flavor. You can add in a little ginger and a pinch of cloves if you have any so the flavor will be more similar to pumpkin pie spice.

3. Cinnamon And Other Spices

If you have some of the spices to make pumpkin spice but not all of them, you can use whatever you have as long as cinnamon is still the base. Use 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon each ginger and nutmeg and 1/8 teaspoon cloves. If you don’t have any one of the these ingredients (ginger, nutmeg or cloves) just leave it out and mix whatever you have with cinnamon.  It won’t have the layers of flavor as pumpkin pie spice, but you can still use it if you are in a pinch.
