How To Make Easy Au Gratin Potatoes
- Preheat Oven. Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Slice Potatoes. Peel the potatoes. You can use a mandoline if you like, but we use the wide grate on a box grater to slice the potatoes. This method slices the potatoes very thin so they cook quicker.
- Grate Cheese. Grate the cheese and set aside.
- Slice Onion. Slice the onion very thin and set aside.
- Layer Potato Bake. Spread 1/3 of the potatoes on the bottom of the baking dish. Add a few dabs of butter over the potatoes, sesason with salt and pepper, then sprinkle some sliced onion over the potatoes, and then sprinkle cheese over the onions. Repeat layering with potatoes, salt and pepper, dabs of butter, sliced onion and cheese. You should end with a top layer of sliced potatoes. Season them with salt and pepper and add dabs of butter to the top.
- Add Milk. Pour the milk over the potatoes and sprinkle the top of the potatoes with the remaining cheese.
- Bake Potatoes. Cover the baking dish with foil and transfer the baking dish to the oven and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork tender and the cheese is melted and golden on top.
Storing And Reheating Leftovers
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If properly stored, it should last up to 5 days.
- To reheat, add 1-2 tablespoons butter or milk to a skillet and reheat the potatoes on low heat until warmed through. You can also reheat them in a preheated oven at 350°F for 10-15 minutes.
